IRC is a multi-user chat system (that is, the
messages that everybody types are displayed to everyone else). It is often used on the
Internet. Originally written by Jarkko Oikarinen in 1988, was first used in Finland. As on
a citizens band radio, there are different channels to support simultaneous conversations
and topics. Client software which runs on your PC (An excellent choice is a program called mIRC) can be
downloaded from the Internet and
installed on your computer.
IRC commands start with "/", so /help provides some local help. Once the user is
on-line with IRC, on-line help is available on channel #irchelp (channel names are
preceded with a "#"). /list provides a list of available channels.
