Transferring files from a remote computer (such as somewhere on the Internet) is known as downloading files. Most people download software either through their Web browser, or through an FTP program. Downloading and installing software from the Internet is very easy once you learn how to do it. Basically, all you need to do is download the software file to a temporary folder that you have created in 'Windows Explorer', and then double-click on the file to launch the installation procedure. Below you will find a step-by-step guide to downloading and installing software from the Internet. If you are using a Web browser and Win95 to download a software program such as Eudora Light for sending and recieving E-mail, after clicking on the link to download the installation file you might see a window similar to this one.
If you do not see the above window, you will probably see the second window shown below. If that is the case then proceed from there.
You will want to select the "Save this program to disk" option and click OK. After you click OK you will see a window similar to this.
If you do not see '(C:)' in the 'Save in:' field, click on the small downward pointing arrow to the right in the 'Save in:' field. You will then see a window similar to this.
Notice that you can select whichever drive or folder you want to download
the program to. You will want to download the program to a temporary folder. If you don't
already have a temporary folder, you can create one by clicking on the 'Create New Folder'
button After you have either selected or created a temporary folder, click the 'Save' button. As the software program file is downloading, you should see the following window.
After the file has finished downloading, open 'Windows Explorer' and then open the temporary folder. Make sure that you have closed all other open applications. Double-click on the downloaded file. This will launch the installation of the software program. If you carefully follow the installation instructions, you will have successfully downloaded and installed software from the Internet. |
